Design
The future environment is planned in detail based on the model developed in the second phase. This phase will define a standard SQL Server build for the organization as well as determine any high availability or scale-out technologies to be used. Additionally, any virtualization infrastructure, monitoring, disaster recovery plans and security needs will be included in the design. The design includes defining migration technique or virtualization methods and testing where applicable. In some cases, databases will be upgraded (e.g. from SQL Server 2000 to SQL Server 2008) and this may require an approach using a staged approach to limit the number of simultaneous changes.
